Reverse charge and VIES: Large BusinessUpdated 2026-10-18

What the app does and does not do

Shopify calculates every tax amount. The app explains the result: it prints tax lines, a per-rate breakdown with the taxable base when that base can be proven, tax-exempt notices, and the intra-EU B2B notice. It never changes an amount.

Reverse Charge (Large Business and above)

  1. Set Your EU Country.
  2. Choose What You Sell: physical goods cite the Article 138 intra-Community-supply exemption; services cite the Article 196 reverse charge.
  3. Keep Show Reverse Charge Notice on.

The notice prints when the buyer is billed in another EU country, a buyer VAT number is present and Shopify charged no tax. Detection uses the billing country.

Buyer VAT Detection (all plans)

The buyer's VAT number is taken from, in order: a number you entered on the order's Tax section, a tax credential collected at checkout, or an order attribute (your configured attribute name first, then common names such as "VAT Number"). Set VAT Attribute Name if your checkout stores it under its own key.

VIES validation (Large Business and above)

On any order's Tax section click Validate. The answer is cached for 30 days and the consultation number is written to the order's event log and version history as proof. A failed check only suppresses the reverse-charge notice on the next generation; it never blocks a document. GB and non-EU numbers cannot be checked. The Self-check button on the Tax page validates your own VAT number.

Exemption reason

Shopify's tax-exempt flag carries no reason. Add one in the Totals block's Exemption Reason field; it is appended to the notice.
